What’s Happening at the Shed
Some major happenings at the Shed. The Club Javelin is making progress, all rust has been cut out
and new pieces welded in and the shell has been away, sandblasted and 2 pack epoxy etch primed.
Some minor bogging and it will then
be ready for undercoating. All the removed
parts have been cleaned and painted.
Mechanical work has also started. An engine
donated to the Club has been chosen for this
car as it is already disassembled, is a later PE
engine and looks in very good condition.
Brakes are also being addressed.
Some of this is now possible as the bench has
been cleared of the Bradford engine belonging
to Keith Andrews that has been worked on for
the passed several weeks. New rings and
mains, oil pump and valves overhauled etc
and the engine is on the way back to Keith to
finish off the heads etc.
Peter Bailey’s Javelin has visited the Shed for a few weeks in between moving from Wellsford to
Taupo. The loan engine was removed and the engine reconditioned by Neil fitted along with some
other tidying up including brakes. The car was then delivered at the Rotorua weekend then taken
home to Taupo.
The loan engine that Peter has been using was smoking, despite it recently having an overhaul just
before fitting last year. So we expected to undertake a ring job on it. So off came the rocker covers to
begin the dismantle when it was discovered that one of the rocker oil feed pipes was completely
broken. This would result in a full flow of pressurised oil into the rocker covers and not being able to
drain as quickly may result in the covers filling with oil which could then be drawn down the valve
guides and may have been the cause of the smoke. So a simple rocker replacement was done rather
than pull all the pistons out. We trust this was the cause of the smoke but will have to wait until the
engine is next used.. Peter wishes to thank all those that worked on the car and Malcolm Cameron
for loaning him the engine while Neil did the reconditioning.

We now have in the Shed the 1939 Jowett
10 of Ken Brownlie and Alan Stanley as they
plan to begin their restoration. This vehicle is
one of only 10 of these 1935 -1940 prewar
vehicles in the Club and probably in New
Zealand. It is a four cylinder flat four of
1166cc. The Jowett 8 has an identical body
but has a two
cylinder engine. The car has
been dry stored for some 30 years and is
basically complete albeit partially dismantled
ready for work.
The Shed now has access to some
equipment that has been acquired or loaned.
A MIG welder, a gas welding set, a bead
blaster and a metal guillotine and bender.
These are being put to good use on the current restoration projects which are the Club Javelin, the
Club CD Bradford and Ken and Alan’s Jowett 10 As two of these projects are still on their wheels we
are still able to attend to minor work to ensure members cars are not off the road.

Jowett Happenings around the Region
-
Doug Wallace from Taupo turned up at the Rotorua weekend in a previously unseen green
Bradford truck. Peter Brown of Rotorua took the opportunity to give his Bradford truck its first Club
outing for some years
- It was great to see some Waikato members meet the Jowetts traveling to Rotorua at the
morning tea stop. Brian and Barbara Hartman from Cambridge and Jos and Carol
Abbott from Hamilton. Hope the line up of Jowetts was motivation.
- All quiet at Jim Scott’s place as his other cars are requiring his attention, however his
Javelin is scheduled for a paint and it is understood that the colour will be “plum". A
mudguard acquired from the Christchurch shed should allow him to finish his “Canary"
Bradford in time for the February Pride of Ownership and Galaxy of Cars.

- Chris Clark, a regular at Shed nights and our chief welder is getting plenty of practice as
he has a Javelin completely stripped and doing a total rebuild and is also at the rust
removal and replacing metal stage. This is Chris’s first Jowett as he is predominately a
classic motorbike man but is enjoying the new challenge of a classic car.
- Alan Stanley and Barbara attended the South Island rally at Fairlie and were honoured
with the loan of Vic Morrison’s Jupiter/Javelin/CD Bradford special to use for the
weekend. This 4 seater open tourer is on a CD Bradford chassis and running gear,
Javelin back guards, Jupiter bonnet, Javelin motor, the doors and boot from a Morris
Oxford. This was a joy to drive with a 5 speed gearbox, the hood down, sunshine and
snow capped mountains, and straight and empty South Island roads
- Terry North’s nice Bradford is looking even smarter as it is now sporting whitewalls.
These like wheel trims really make a difference.
- Ivan Paul’s Javelin that limped home from the Nelson National Rally has had the front
layrub replaced and can now cruise smoothly at speed without bone shaking
vibration.
Rotorua Weekend Away November 10 & 11
Cars from Auckland had their morning tea stop at Robinson’s sports museum, gardens and
Café and we were greeted here by Waikato members who had come to have morning tea.
This was a delightful stop with gardens streams and interesting exhibits.
Next it was off to Rotorua where we were
met by members from Taupo, Otaki,
Rotorua and Katikati. The cars created a
lot of interest lined up lakeside where a
constant flow of people many overseas
tourists chatted with us.
After lunch we each went our own way to
some of the many attractions in Rotorua.
We regrouped for a barbeque in the
evening, followed by a social evening with
some very noisy activities.

Sunday was another sunny day and the Jowett convoy made its way to the local pioneer
Museum to again line up on display whilst we took in the gardens, pioneer buildings and
machinery displays. Heading back to Auckland we had a lunch stop then enjoyed all the
collectable stuff at the Tirau private museum, a treasure trove of stuff of interest to everyone.
A great weekend.
Morning tea with Waikato members Is it something in the Rotorua air.
DINNER AND FILM EVENING
Around forty members and friends enjoyed a coal
range cooked dinner followed by a film in the interesting
setting of Ryder’s Museum. This was a different and
enjoyable event and will be repeated next year when
the museum renovations are complete
WAIUKU HERITAGE WEEKEND AND BRITISH CAR DISPLAY
This was the first gathering of only British
Cars in the Auckland region and around 150
of Britain’s finest lined the main street of
Waiuku which had been closed for this event
along with adjacent streets where the classic
pursuit road race took place. Jowetts as usual
attracted more than their fair share of interest,
especially when the bonnets were opened.
As you can see from the picture we got the
prime location.
Neil Moore raced his Jupiter in the pursuit
race, and entered the concours the next day
in full period costume and lunch basket. While
not the flashest or the fastest he still took out
the overall combined events trophy. Well
done
